Dentist in Blaine Offers Tips That Make Oral Health Fun For The Family
April 17, 2017
With all the emerging information about the impact of your oral health on your overall health and well being, we can definitely tell you that there’s never been a more important time to take charge of your oral health. If taking great care of your teeth is a priority for you, how can you make it important to your kids as well? Dr. Douglas Green, your dentist in Blaine, offers some tips that make caring for your oral health fun for the whole family.
Offer Healthy Snack Choices
You know that eating fruits and vegetables is good for your body, but did you know that it also benefits your oral health? Fruits and veggies actually neutralize the acids in your mouth that cause tooth decay, while also increasing your saliva flow to wash away bacteria and food particles.
Have healthy snacks like carrot sticks or apple slices cut and ready and water to drink for snack after school. Save the starchy foods until dinner. When you’re eating a meal, you’re more likely to have a drink to help wash away the starch so it doesn’t stick to your teeth. Having your child help you pick out and prepare healthy snacks is a fun way to involve them in the process and teach them about nutritional foods.
Teach Consistent Brushing and Flossing Habits
Make sure your child understands the importance of brushing twice per day and flossing at least once each day. Help them with these tasks until around the age of eight years old to ensure that they’re making the most of their brushing and flossing time. You may even consider using a timer to help them brush for the full two minutes.
Many parents invest in an electric toothbrush for their child to help with brushing technique. Not only does it do all the hard work for you, it also times the brushing session to ensure that it’s the full two minutes. There are even some brushes that make the process more fun for your child with their favorite songs or characters.
